Spring Break Style on a Budget

It’s March Break! Time to leave grey weather and the books behind. If you’re heading south soon, and your wardrobe needs an update, you don’t need to put down the plastic on new duds. Read my article on getting a hot spring break look for less on 29 secrets, or continue reading below…

Ahh spring break. Time to ditch the books and relax on the beach and hit up the party circuit. You’ve saved up every penny for that getaway, and only have a shoestring budget for a new bikini. Here are some ways to reinvent and revisit hits from last summer’s wardrobe.

roxy dress in water mint

Mint
Anything in mint is still wearable. It was the hot colour last Spring, and continues to be a top trend, and was seen on the runways of Dior’s Haute Couture Spring 2013 collection. Bust out that old cotton dress in seafoam and wear it again, the colour will compliment your tan. I’m wearing the Good Times Dress in Water, c/o Roxy.

Eyelet lace
Eyelet lace shorts might have been a trend of the past, but you can still get mileage out of them by pairing them with an edgier top. A denim chambray shirt is casual, but tones down the girliness of the lace.

Toms shoes
Toms were a hit last summer, and are still a comfy and responsible footwear choice. If your pair has seen better days, why not reinvent them by modge-podging printed fabric scraps, or painting them all together? The shoes are made of canvas, so why not let them be your canvas for a new work of art. There are a ton of tutorials on YouTube, so get inspired, and wear your one-of-a-kind pair of Toms trekking through ancient ruins.

mexican navajo print backpack la luna roxy dress

Backpacks
You might have grown tired of the backpack trend by now, but you can easily resurrect that ripped up Herschel bag and bring it to the beach as a practical and roomy beach bag. You’ll have space for all your essentials, a change of clothes and tons of tanning lotion, plus you can easily take your valuables with you, hands-free as you walk along the beach or go horseback riding. My backpack was from a market stand in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Even though it’s a print, I think it goes perfectly with the palm tree sunset of the La Luna Dress, c/o Roxy. I would love to wear this outfit again to go exploring in a coastal town.

neon high heel shoes

Neon accessories
Neon might seem out of place in a blistery winter setting, but you should definitely pack a bright clutch or sexy pair of shoes for a night out.

mint high low skirt trevi fountain

High-Low Skirt
While people may be saying the days of the analogous hem are over, spring break might be the last chance to wear that chiffon mullet dress or skirt before the silhouette is out. Update the look with a textured bustier top, or eye-catching statement jewelry. These skirts also make a stylish beach cover up for when you go to lunch.

diy tie dye levi's

Tie-Dye shorts
Last summer, there was a frenzy over vintage Levi’s 501s in crazy colours and dying techniques. Those hotpants are here to stay for yet another summer season, so get on the trend by wearing your pair from last year, or dip dye an old pair of jean shorts. There are even spray dyes that set with a quick tumble in your dryer. I recommend SEI Tumble Dye.

Whether you have a large budget or not, there’s no reason why you can’t look and feel stylish during your vacay. We’ll be honest, you’ll probably be in your bikini most of the time anyway!
