Water Dress

Fashion and style inspiration usually comes from many different places for me. It can be a building, a painting, a special place or a stunning accessory that jumps out and helps make everything else fall into place. With this look, however, the colour speaks for itself. Here are some photos from a walk along the beach near my hotel in Playa del Carmen.

I’m wearing the Good Times Dress by Roxy, the colour is aptly titled “Water”. The colour is a dreamy shade of bright turquoise that looks like the Caribbean sea. I wanted to work with the theme of water and incorporate pieces that complimented the simple, feminine style of the dress.

I picked up on the water theme with this bubble necklace that is similar to J. Crew’s famous bubble necklace. I bought one in coral for my last trip to Mexico, and loved it so much that I had to pick one up in my favourite colour. You can find a cheap version of the pricier J.Crew favourite necklace here. Thankfully, it matched this dress perfectly, a cascade of turquoise baubles that add to the almost monochromatic water theme I was going for.

IMG_0745I paired the dress with a Mexican-made leather saddle bag I bought in Playa del Carmen. The simple design complimented the no-fuss styling of the dress, and echoed the contrast between water and sand along the shores. This bag is really my go-to and can easily go from surf to turf, especially with its rugged, traditional construction.

IMG_9927The dress can also go from the beach to a night out on the town. I loved it so much, I wore it later on my trip to do some shopping at Playa. I keep going back to the little photo spot above. I love finding old signs, and these seafood advertisements are both authentic and kitschy at the same time.

A few hundred metres away from Playa del Carmen along the beach was a grouping of fishing and tourist boats that would come in the morning during low tide to fish. I loved seeing the boats go by and it made for a lovely scene. Some of the locals depend on fishing to make a living, and even by the shore, you could see little minnows that would soon become a big catch.

Continuing my water theme, I accessorized with these turquoise bracelets. I’m wearing a light blue daisy bracelet from Forever 21 and an amazing silver and turquoise turtle bracelet. When I snorkelled a few weeks ago in Mexico, I kept hoping to see a sea turtle. While that didn’t happen, I’ll hold onto that hope for my next dive.

IMG_0679The best part of walking along the beach in the morning in Mexico? The dogs of course. I fell in love with this perky Dalmatian that reminded me of my old Dalmatian, Max. I could only dream of walking my dog every morning in the early sun… I don’t think I’d ever complain about having to take out the dog!

I’ve always been attracted to water and this dress sums up all the sentimental feelings I have towards the sea. The colour and the crepe chiffon fabric evoke the frothiness of the waves. While this is the perfect LBD (little BLUE dress) for summer, I might have to pair the dress with tights and a chunky cotton knit sweater now to bring back the cheeriness of the sea until summer comes back.
