Lucian Matis Spring/Summer 2012 Collection

On Wednesday night, I attended Lucian Matis’ Spring/Summer 2012 Collection.

The collection featured elegant frocks in bright colours that are perfect for spring.  Matis says his collection was inspired by a painting by Henri Matisse, entitled “Green Line”.

The collection evidently referenced the colour pallette and textures of the impressionist. Matis says, “That painting at the time was so revolutionary and was so fresh and daring.” Watch a clip below to view the S/S 2012 Lucian Matis collection.

Many of the dresses featured layered tulle, creating large pouffy dresses that remind me of the underside of a ballerina’s rehearsal tutu.  While it’s not very wearable, I like the play with texture.

Texture was an important part of his collection, and this dress featuring a hand-sewn basketweave technique stood out for me.

He also had a lot of layering and ruffles, accented with metallic jewels.

The beading was picked up in the jewellery design which was by Zeina jewellery.

I thought the styling was very ornate, but I loved the slicked back hair, courtesy of Schwarzkopf and the simple, fresh faced makeup done by Smashbox.

I couldn’t get over the craziness of the nails at the show.  Long, talon like nails are in style this season, but these tips get an update with the floral watercolour print, which was done by Tips Nail Bar.

This dress was one of my favourites of the collection.  It was as if a natural woman in the nude fell into a bed of roses.

Models posed for media and guests at the event.

Fashionable attendees included Jay Strut.  I loved his clutch by Danier from their basics line.  The embossed croc leather added luxury to the simple piece.

Marie Marin and Momoko Hiroi stood out for their colourful patterned outfits.  Marin is actually one of Matis’ assistants, and designed her own outfit, as well as Momoko’s floral dress.  How cute are her fuschia tights?

Fuchsia and red together seems to be an emerging colour trend, and Matis referenced this in a few pieces.  To balance out all the colour, embellished bodysuits and boy shorts in a neutral flesh colour added a glam-rock vibe and contrast to the diaphanous gowns.

Matis adds, “I wanted to mix colour and texture and sheer movement.  Something fresh with a lot of volume. I’m known for being a romantic, so it shows the romantic influence in this collection.”  Matis definitely succeeded in bringing to life the romance of spring.
