I long for April days with no rain. While I love May flowers as much as the next person, it saddens me to have to reach for a rain jacket instead of wearing a supple leather jacket. This one is my favourite, and completely one-of-a-kind.
It was designed by Yvonne Lin, a Ryerson University fashion grad. The jacket was a finalist in the Danier Design Challenge, a competition where third year Ryerson Fashion students have a chance to compete for a cash prize, an internship and get their jacket designs into production. I modeled the jacket at the winner’s presentation a couple years ago (try to spot me in the photo below), and while Yvonne’s design didn’t win, it was a winner in my eyes.
Made from buttery-soft leather, the motorcycle jacket juxtaposes asymmetrical lines and zippers with a feminine corset back and princess puff sleeves.
The details and seaming are immaculate, and it fit me like a glove. I just had to have it! Luckily, Yvonne sold it to me and I’ve been singing  praises about this jacket ever since.
It was even featured in Flare Magazine! Needless to say, I treasure this piece in my closet. I feel so lucky to own it, and I was so happy to support a Ryerson fashion student.
For this look, I wanted to wear the black and white stripes trend. I bought this jersey miniskirt from H&M a while ago, but found it hard to wear with other items in my closet. I think the secret to pulling off horizontal stripes is to keep it simple. I paired the skirt with a plain white tee, my magic leather jacket and a striking pair of Zara asymmetrical stilettos.
When dealing with horizontal stripes that can widen areas, it’s important to balance out your figure. I did this by wearing a jacket with oversized shoulders, creating an hourglass effect. I wore this skirt a few months ago and also whittled my hips with an aline coat to break up the lines.
While horizontal stripes might sound daunting at first, as long as you balance out proportions and wear sky-high heels, you will look great in spring’s hottest trend.
As for my leather jacket? I’m hoping that the sun stays out long enough so I can show it off and add a touch of girly rock and roll to my spring outfits.
