How to wear a red wrap dress | Summer in the City with H&M

how to wear a red wrap dress

Summer is finally here in the city! With the May long weekend ahead, a new summer wardrobe is in order. I love shopping at H&M to find standout pieces, or trendy accessories that can add new life into your wardrobe. I’ve teamed up with H&M Canada to share my tips on how to wear a red wrap dress for summer. This look is perfect for a brunch date, casual summer wedding, or being patriotic on Canada Day! I’ll personally be repeating this outfit on my upcoming trip to Portugal as well.

How to wear a red wrap dress: Accessories

There are many ways to style a classic wrap dress. They can easily be dressed up for a special occasion with pumps and refined accessories or can be worn with white sneakers and layered under a denim jacket for an easy-going look. Here, I’ve gone in the middle and styled it for a date by the water.

I am wearing a red wrap dress c/o H&M, a straw sun hat c/o H&M, beaded sandals c/o H&M, floral earrings c/o H&M and a black bag.

If you’re wearing a red wrap dress, my suggestion is to stick to neutral accessories. My sun hat and bag are in neutral colours to allow the dress to be the focal point. However, I think it’s fun to add a tiny contrasting pop of colour! I’ve done that here with the pale-yellow shoes and yellow floral earrings. The pale yellow offers a bit of interest but doesn’t overtake the dominant red colour. I also love how my yellow floral earrings pick up on that same theme! I think some cobalt blue accessories could also work for this look as well.

How to wear a red wrap dress: Balanced Proportions

Because this dress has a tea length, I wore it with a bit of a heel instead of flat sandals to give my legs more length. You can easily get swallowed up in all the gorgeous tiered layers of this piece, so a bit of height works for anyone (unless you’re blessed to be over 5’10”!) I am 5’8”, so on a more petite frame, this dress might be perfect for you with flats.

Because this particular red wrap dress has an A-line shape, I wanted to balance that up top, so I paired it with a sunhat! This is a great visual trick if you’re trying to balance out wider hips or a more voluminous skirt. It also draws attention back up to your face! Proof in point: I took a few snaps of this exact outfit without the hat on and I much preferred the look with the hat. It’s a funny visual trick… and as a bonus, this natural straw hat offers great protection from the sun while being chic.

Summer trends at H&M

Straw hats and accessories are a major trend for summer, and H&M had so many wonderful options. Whether you prefer a panama hat, classic sunhat or a hybrid like mine, it’s a great place to score a beautiful straw sun hat. I might have to pick up a couple for some fun DIY projects. This one in particular is well made and held its shape after being stuffed into a backpack!

I really enjoyed this shoot as it was our first time at the Harbour Front this year. Took a while for the good weather, so what better way to kick it off than to return to the water.

This red wrap dress is such a beautiful contrast with the sort of grayish background. And I LOVE the hat.
