Flatiron District

My last day in New York wasn’t supposed to be my last day in New York. In fact, I should have been sitting in Evidence class, but was stuck in NYC after my plane had anti-freeze drip through the cabin door and a freak ice storm came right as we were about to take off. My boyfriend made his flight (note to self, stick with Canadian airlines!) while I had the chance to roam the streets for an extra day. I had the chance to take in the gorgeous Hiromi Asai show, and meet my friend Dasha, a Torontonian turned NYC expat to explore the Flatiron District.

I’m wearing a floral silk blouse c/o Joe Fresh, a high waisted skirt from Hudson’s Bay, black coat by Mackage, my Alexander Wang Prisma backpack and over the knee boots c/o La Canadienne.

Outside of the Hiromi Asai show, Jorag Photo snapped my picture as I shielded myself from the rain. I wore this fun bejewelled turban to keep my hair from getting completely frizzy. I love how the bright floral print of this blouse brings some life into a drab, black winter outfit. I can’t wait to pair it with a pair of cute boyfriend jeans or a mini skirt once the weather gets better.

It was raining so hard, but after a glass of wine at the Ace Hotel, we left to go shopping and the rain finally let up. We snapped some pictures in front of the iconic flatiron building, before stepping into Eataly. I picked up some impossible to find Italian gluten-free cookies that brought back memories of living off of them while on vacation four years ago. I also bought these tiny digestive candies that taste like orange blossom and violets; they are so unique and lovely! I wish I was more in the mood for gelato, but we carried on.

We did some window shopping down fifth, before stopping at Parsons, which is where Dasha is working on┬áher Masters in film. I loved getting a sneak peek into the infamous fashion design studios. It felt so much different than how it’s portrayed in Project Runway! The school’s library also has a stunning view of the streets below and the Empire State Building.

I said my goodbyes, and started walking back up Fifth to catch my train back to Newark. I was getting worried I wouldn’t be able to fly back because of the massive snowstorm (50 cm) brewing back home in Ottawa.

My trip wouldn’t be complete without a stop to Shake Shack, and believe it or not, it was so warm out that day, I was able to eat it al fresco on the patio in Gramercy Park. I was kind of disappointed I had missed out on Shake Shack with my boyfriend, so clearly there was a reason my flight was cancelled.

As I picked up my things and took my black and white shake to go, the sky turned into this perfect pastel dream… ending the day, and trip on a perfect note.
