A Visit to Versailles

A Visit to Versailles

In March, I spent a few days in Paris with my family, and got to visit the Chateau de Versailles. I haven’t posted any photos from that day trip, but I thought that today was a good time, considering all the hype surrounding Chanel’s Cruise Collection for 2013, which was shown a couple of days ago.

Pastel colours, floral print, white and gold. All pivotal elements in Karl Lagerfeld’s latest collection. I incorporated some of these themes into my own look too, featuring a dress from Forever XXI, a mint blue blazer from H&M, a gold lion belt and vintage quilted pink purse.

Of course, Marie Antoinette is a huge style inspiration. The monogrammed gold balustrades decorated her Petit Trianon.

A little bit dusty (seriously, the French government needs to preserve this!) but Marie Antoinette’s bedchamber in the palace was stunning. The print was echoed in Chanel’s collection on a few of his dresses.

So many tourists with so many beautiful pieces to see. The famed hall of mirrors is behind me.

The palace has so many luxurious elements, but I was more enchanted with the shadows and the castle’s past.

For lunch, I ate inside the palace. What a grand experience. Overpriced roast chicken, but honestly, it had the best French roasted vegetables I’ve ever tasted. Totally worth it, when you’re overlooking a garden and munching on macarons.

As usual, I’m always interested in the stories of the women who used to inhabit the castle grounds. The beauty and elegance of this photo is so feminine.

My favourite part of my tour was a visit to Marie Antoinette’s Petit Trianon (which was her castle) and her farm and Hamlet. The Petit Trianon was decorated in sweet shades of baby blue and light pistachio, the official colour, which was picked up by my favourite Parisian bakery, Laduree.

Marie Antoinette’s farm even had a lookout tower that reminded me of a fairytale princess’ castle. The Queen liked to escape the regimented life of the French court in these German-style farmhouses with her children.

The manicured gardens probably look a lot prettier now than when I visited. I loved the topiaries and sculptures in the gardens.

To echo the golden gates of Versailles and “Le Roi du Soleil”, I wore this gold lion belt from a pop-up shop in Utrecht.

Vive la France.
