Happy Thanksgiving long weekend! For us here in Canada, the second weekend of October is a time to get together with family and enjoy good food and company. In addition to a turkey dinner, I’m sharing where to go apple picking near Toronto in case you want to pick your own fresh apples to make a killer pie. I’m also sharing a fall apple picking outfit that is both comfortable and chic.
What to wear apple picking – Fall Outfit inspiration
To go apple picking near Toronto, I wore a denim dress from Joe Fresh (old similar denim dress here), my violet tall Hunter boots, a chartreuse trench (similar trench here), an Alexander Wang mini Emile bag, and my vintage silk Gucci scarf.
If you’re wondering what to wear apple picking, I highly suggest wearing a pair of tall rubber boots. The grass was very high in between the apple trees, and it had rained the night before. My boyfriend’s suede boots were completely soaked by the end of our apple picking adventure! I like pairing tall Hunter boots with a shorter dress and bare legs because it still looks feminine. You could also wear Hunter Boots with a nice pair of denim, a sweater and a quilted vest once the weather gets colder.
I also dressed in layers, which was key. My chartreuse trench offered a shield from the wind, but once the sun came out, I wore the dress on its own. A silk scarf might not seem very warm, but I find they’re perfect for mild fall days. Silk scarves are a huge accessory trend, so I highly suggest scouring vintage stores or online destinations like eBay and Fashionphile.
Overall, this apple picking outfit was incredibly comfortable and wearable. I also felt really cute and vintage-inspired as I taste-tested apples in search of the best tree!
Where to go apple picking near Toronto
Every year, we head back to Applewood Farm Winery in Stouffville. We visited the apple orchard two years ago before Thanksgiving and had a ball discovering the best-tasting apples and bringing some fruit wine and apple cider home. If you’re researching where to go apple picking near Toronto, I love that this farm is located 20 minutes north of the city, off the 404 on McCowan road in Stouffville. Living midtown, there was next to no traffic on the weekends and the entire drive was all of 30 minutes. There was also acres of ample free parking as well.
Included in the $10 admission fee is access to all the grounds, hay rides to the pumpkin patch and apple trees, a corn maze and a free pumpkin. Each pumpkin is $4 each, so I would say the admission is worth it to thwart major crowds. The prices for “u pick” apple picking is $20 per 20lb bag. Definitely reasonable, especially when there are a number of apple varieties available, depending when you go to check out the harvest. In addition to apples on the farm, there are strawberries, raspberries, vegetables, which makes it a great outing year round. Kids seemed to love the tractor hayride, and collecting varieties of apples from the trees.
Applewood Farm Winery also has an adorable wine shop in a barn that sells a fantastic dry hopped cider (perfect for my fellow celiacs), fruit wine, and apple spreads and chutney. During apple picking season, you can access the wine shop for free without an admission, in case you’re in the area and love cider!
We picked mainly Cortland, Spartan, Golden Delicious and Honeycrisp apples, and the Ambrosia apples were almost ripe (I’ll admit we snuck a couple and they were my favourite). The earlier you visit, the better. Last year, Applewood Farm Winery RAN OUT OF APPLES. It’s an incredibly popular destination to go apple picking near Toronto, and one of my favourite fall traditions!

This year I’m thankful for a lot of things. Mostly, for my beautiful home and partner, as well as my extreme privilege that I was able to complete my articles and licensing to finally become a lawyer.
