On Friday, one of my dreams came true! I’ve been watching Marilyn Denis for years with my mom, and I couldn’t believe that several years later, I appeared on Fashion Fridays! You can watch my full segment here.
Emily is a busy theatre student, and was hoping to take her look up a notch. The style we went for was “ecclectic chic.” At first, I wanted to get to know her a little better and find out what she felt comfortable with. As I mentioned in the segment, I didn’t want her to feel like she was wearing a costume, so I really focused on dressing her body type and bringing out her sparkling personality through her clothes.
At first, Emily was a little reluctant to try new pieces. A cute grey tee with tassles even made her say that it reminded her of her mother’s rug! It was all in good fun though, and I really enjoyed sharing some of my styling tips.
For her final look, I chose a $15 dress from H&M with a great funky pattern. Emily wasn’t totally keen on all the orange and brown in the dress, but I layered a gorgeous purple waterfall trench jacket on top to add an elegant layering piece. This jacket is actually from H&M’s Conscious Collection, and is made of recycled fibres! The solid coloured jacket over a printed dress whittles her shape and makes this 5’10” lady look even taller! The dress is also the perfect shape for Emily, as it flares out in a subtle A-line skimming over her hips while showing off her waist – which was one of the features Emily wanted to highlight.

For accessories, I added in this fun tan fringe bag which can also go casual with jeans and a tee. I love the movement of the fringe and I think Emily will get a lot of use out of this crossbody style. For jewelry, we really uped the ante with geometric earrings and a gold cuff, and some rough rock jewelry that Emily loved. All of the pieces are really eclectic, but keeping everything in one metal colour (this case, gold) makes it cohesive.
As for Emily’s shoes, I loved these lace-up wedges. It was a bit of a challenge finding shoes that would fit in H&M, but these army green lace-ups were right on trend and still had that artsy, eclectic vibe we were going for. Wedges are the ultimate summer shoe, and this pair will go from day to night no problem.
The day we shot the segment was so much fun. We came super early to get our makeup done, and I had a chance to hang around in the green room, sneak a peek of The Social’s set, and run a rehearsal. It was all so bittersweet and reminded me of my days interning in journalism school. It was a little hectic styling Emily in one commercial break, but I really enjoyed the hustle backstage!
Meeting Marilyn Denis was also awesome! She has such an amazing personality, and cooled any nerves on set. It was so easy chatting with her and she always knows what to ask and keep the show going.
I wanted to also thank you, as a reader of this blog for following me. You are the reason I was able to participate in this experience and I truly thank you for that! I was also so happy that people tuned in, voted and commented, and chose my makeover for Emily as the winner of the Blogger Battle! It was a surreal moment, and I’m still pinching myself! I’m really looking forward to writing for TheLoop.ca, and hopefully more exciting things to come. Above all, this experience reignited my love of styling other people and bringing out their personality and confidence, so who knows, maybe one day I will expand my blog into styling!
Thank you again for watching, and if you’ve missed the clip, you can check out the full segment on Marilyn.ca.
