Peter Pilotto for Target haul video & review

Yesterday, I woke up at 7 a.m. to go to my local Target store to scoop up items from their latest designer collaboration with Peter Pilotto. Watch my haul video below to see what items I picked up from the print-happy Peter Pilotto for Target collection.

My sister, mom and I all came along, and we drove up to the Centrepoint Mall location, about 10 minutes before the store opened at 8 a.m. When the doors finally opened, the small group of people came inside and a young store employee told us that they’re not carrying the collection and that we’d need to drive up to Hillcrest Mall. I couldn’t believe that Centrepoint didn’t carry the line, as they had the Phillip Lim for Target collection in stock back in September. My mom didn’t even park yet, so we hopped in the car and drove up to the Thornhill store.

Once inside, I was so disappointed to find completely bare racks, save for a few (ugly) skirts in size 16. I waited around a bit, as many women had carts full and weeded through pieces that weren’t the right size, or that they wouldn’t take. There weren’t that many shoppers, about 15-20 people only, and everyone was friendly. My sister waited by the fitting room as employees handed out dresses, tops and skirts from people that were actually trying things on, instead of leaving the store with piles of merch. My faith in humanity was restored, and I was happy that everyone was being conscious about what they were buying and not buying into the “hype” of a limited designer collab. Women in the change room were asking for opinions from friends and other shoppers, and many people were swapping out pieces they wanted or didn’t want.

I only ended up with one dress, a cute sleeveless number with a stripes and floral pattern in yellow, the red cotton peplum top (which looks amazing on), and the sunglasses. The sunglasses are definitely going back to the store. You can see in the video how they are cheap plastic and make a blood curdling squeak when you pry open the arms. I like the fun floral print, but for $16.99, they’re overpriced and badly produced, compared to Target’s main line of inexpensive sunnies.

My mom picked up the same dress, and a few graphic tops. My sister also picked up the pretty blue shirtdress which works in both summer and winter.

As a side-note, the Peter Pilotto for Target collection is sized pretty large. I usually wear a small and ended up purchasing items in extra small. I tried on a size six dress and it was swimming on me, even though my true size is a four. Certain items look okay larger, like the blouses, but the dress looked a lot better in a more figure-fitting size.

The Peter Pilotto for Target collection was a bit of a let down for me in terms of the translation from editorials and promotion to actually seeing the items in person. I think that the dresses we purchased were beautiful, but the shorts, bathing suits and mint colour block blazer looked awkward and poorly constructed. The printed pieces were beautiful, but when you see a mass of them, it kind of had an “old lady” feel. I definitely think these pieces are paired best with neutral accessories and classic layers like a blazer or plain black pencil skirt. I couldn’t imagine wearing this collection head-to-toe, unlike the Phillip Lim collection which lended itself to mixing and pairing pieces.

I’ve already worn the striped dress, and with its flirty ruffle hem and fun print, I’m sure it will become a favourite in my closet! I have a feeling many people might end up returning pieces they don’t want, so keep checking your local store, or shop the Peter Pilotto for Target collection online at Target.com or Net-a-porter if you don’t live in the US.

Thanks Tracy! I would go back this week, people might return items after having second thoughts! If you’re in the US there are plenty of pieces still online too!

Love seeing the way you style the pieces!

I ended up getting the flowy pants in the same print as the dress – any ideas of how to style them?

Also – I agree about the sunglasses. Not great quality. I will be returning for sure.

I love palazzo pants and am so jealous you got them! I would pair them with a plain black or white tee (or crop top) or a white blouse! You could even layer a moto leather jacket on top too! It’s a bit daunting to wear such a statement pant, but I think you should wear something plain and neutral and let them speak for themselves. I also like the idea of a plain black turtleneck to wear them in winter!
