Pavoni brought the romance of Versailles to the runway at World Mastercard Fashion Week tonight in Toronto. The Spring/Summer collection featured cocktail and evening gowns that were ornate, bejewelled and detailed, with ruffles that even Marie Antoinette would approve of.
I almost went home, but I’m so glad I caught this stunning collection. I loved that there was a variety in the presentation, with metallic cocktail dresses with edgy hardware contrasted with lace details (perfect for the young starlet) and dramatic organza and tulle gowns with lace and filigree overlays.
Pavoni is a Canadian eveningwear brand, founded by Mike Derderian and Gianni Falcone. The brand has shown in Paris, and kicked of LA Fashion Week to critical acclaim. I loved the drama and distinct vision of the collection. It really did evoke the ornate beauty of the Versailles Palace.
I thought this dress was very wearable, and I think the brand is adept in laying lace details on top of illusion panels, creating geometric cut-out shapes that are softened by the feminine floral lace.
This tulle dress was stunning from every angle. From the soft sorbet-hued tulle to the rich navy lace overlay, the cut was both sexy and flirty. But wait till you see the back…
Even more stunning. I am such a sucker for fishtail dresses. This would be a gorgeous bridal gown if the overlay would be in a complimentary peach tone. Sorbet-coloured wedding dresses are a huge trend in bridal now, so forgoing white was an excellent choice on the designer’s part.
This was another wearable cocktail dress that reminds me of the detailing featured in many of Alexander McQueen’s designs. I still love the illusion of the lace, and the way it creates organic shapes on the model’s collarbone.
The collection featured a few cocktail dresses, and while they were impossibly short, I’m sure that on a normal human being and not the superhuman known as Frances Coombe, the dress would be the perfect party length for those of us that are not 5 foot 10.
This look was also beautiful, and perfect for a more mature client. I love the peplum waist and the sleek cut of the skirt. Separates are often overlooked in evening wear, and this look does it right without looking like the mother of the bride.
This tulle number closed the show, and had so many heavy layers of tulle that the model had to hold it up. I loved the cream colour and the detailing on the front. It’s such a refreshing approach to bridal, just by changing up traditional white. The collection was beautiful and definitely brought the romance and opulence of the Versailles palace to the stark runway at Toronto Fashion week.
