The Oscars 2020 Red Carpet was a bit… boring this year. I was waiting for a wow factor (like Gaga’s Tiffany Diamond at last year’s Oscars) or a defining moment, but was left with metallic dresses, capes, and some instagram friendly puffed sleeves. Here’s my take on the Oscars 2020 Best & Worst Dressed looks.
Best Dressed at the 2020 Oscars:
This might be a controversial pick, but I absolutely loved Billie Eilish’s Chanel look. Off the heels of her Gucci Grammy outfit, this look is so fun and subversive. Love that she’s wearing Chanel sweatpants on the red carpet (something a “Karl Chanel” would never had let happen).
Another controversial pick is this pink tulle and black lace Givenchy frock on Gal Gadot. It looked incredible on stage and was very dramatic and feminine.
Renee Zellweger played it safe in this white, one-shouldered Armani gown. It’s simple and gorgeous. Did you know that white is also the most popular colour for best actress Oscar winners? I think her hair and simple makeup is very elegant and lovely, and I like that the only accessory she has on is a large cocktail ring.
Janelle Monae stunned in this futuristic frock from Ralph Lauren. It was so stiff and other-worldly and so fitting for her creative, dynamic style.
Cynthia Erivo made my jaw drop in this va-va-voom Versace gown! Everything about this is glamorous and fierce.
Brie Larson also hopped on the cape trend with this stunning pink-champagne hued Celine gown. This dress fit her so well and compliments her box office-busting role as Captain Marvel.
Natalie Portman’s reserved Christian Dior look was very mysterious and stood out among other attendees. One detail of this dress I loved was that the cape had the names of female directors embroidered along the edge! A fitting detail coming from Dior’s creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, whose past couture collections have had strong feminist themes.
What can I say… I’m a sucker for a yellow gown. Mindy Kaling was a presenter and donned this Dolce & Gabbana dress. It’s so simple, elegant and evokes Old Hollywood, with a modern woman wearing it! This dress really stood out amongst the capes, and excessive sparkle. You can’t deny it fits her impeccably and that diamond collar necklace would make Elizabeth Taylor jealous.
Worst Dressed at the 2020 Oscars:
Molly Sims underwhelmed in this pink flamingo gown. The crystal bodice does not match the messy ruffled bottom.
Laura Dern won the Oscar, but this lampshade tassled Armani gown does not win at all. I’m horrified by how puckered the seems are towards the bottom, as well as the bizarre tassles along the bustline.
I liked this Elie Saab dress, then I hated it. Sandra Oh went full on maximalist in this floral, sequined, shoulder puff monstrosity. I think this dress could have been really lovely with strong shoulders in metallic instead of the floral tulle.
Olivia Coleman’s Stella McCartney look was less than appealing with those bizarre flaps and rhinestones.
Another huge let down was Saoirse Ronan in this Valentino creation. It’s giving me strong Izma from the Emperor’s New Groove vibes.
Another Valentino mishap was this fabric bolt of sequins affixed to Maya Rudolph.
Rounding out my Oscars 2020 Best & Worst Dressed is Kristen Wiig in this puzzling red gown, also from Valentino. I’ve never seen so many misses from one fashion house in my life! This one is exceptionally bad with the fish fins on the sides, peek-a-side-boobs and black gloves. While I loved black gloves on Gaga last year, it only makes sense for a pop star. This lasagna 🍅 tomato frock on the other hand is incredibly bizarre that not even a Kristen & Maya moment on stage could save it.
