Lady Gaga Stands Fur Something…

Lady Gaga is a fashion icon. With two Vogue covers under her belt (including one September issue out soon), she is a modern-day trendsetter. But recently, she was blasted by critics for wearing fur when she was spotted wearing a large, oversized fur coat while on her European tour. Lady Gaga didn’t ignore the controversy and tweeted, “For those press and such who are writing about whether or not my fur is actually real, please don’t forget to credit the designer HERMES. Thank You! LOVE, gaga.’

Mama Monster went on to post a full statement on her stance on fur on her website.

To the fans. i want you to know that I care deeply about your feelings and views, and I will always support your philosophies about life. We’ve been having over-arching conversations about society, equality, and politics for the past five years, and we should continue. I do not however support violent, abusive, and childish campaigns for ANY CAUSE. Particularly one that I respect. “Animal Rights.” I am choosing not to comment on whether or not the furs I purchase are faux fur-pile or real because I would think it hypercritical not to acknowledge the python, ostrich, cow hide, leather, lamb, alligator, “kermit” and not to mention meat, that I have already worn. This should already put me in a category as one who appreciates and adores the beauty of animals in fashion, but am not a strict vegan. I have truly always stayed away from skinned fur, especially i have never been able to afford a nice one, but this does not mean my morals are rigid and that I won’t bend at the sight of an absolute art piece of a coat. I have no chains about this. You see a carcass, I see a museum pièce de résistance. But I am truly sorry to fans who are upset by this, its a fair and applaudable feeling about the health and safety of animals. I respect your views, please respect mine. And to campaigners, Save your flour to make bread for the children who are hungry. And Kim Kardashian is fabulous.

This is why I love Lady Gaga. It’s no one’s business whether her fur is real or faux. It’s obvious that Gaga is not a burlap-wearing hippie, so we can draw our own conclusions about her coat. Gaga wears her outfits (and animals) for the sake of her art and to propagate her image. While my personal views stray towards using animals for functionality (like we’ve been doing since the Stone Age), I think it’s hypocritical to criticize her wardrobe choices when we are all guilty of consuming and wearing animal products (yes, I’m even looking at you vegans!)

Personally, I am not against fur, as long as it is used as a material that provides the most functionality and warmth to a garment. Living in Canada, I wouldn’t be able to survive cold climates without a fur-trimmed hood, boots and a fur scarf. You can agree to disagree with me on this, but I get very cold come December. Whether or not a fur coat is necessary in the heat of August in Europe is another story… but to be frank, we are all entitled to wear what we want.

I value vegan products sometimes (mostly diet-related), but we must also consider the petroleum and shipping used to create faux fur (that always originates from China) or vegan leather. Vintage fur and leather are a way to give new life into a “carcass” and continue the cycle of an animal’s life. We should in no way be chastised by intimidating groups for sharing our own wardrobe and lifestyle preferences. So fur protesters, listen to Lady Gaga and save the flour for bread, and the red paint for art class.

And Lady Gaga is fabulous.
