I always look forward to the first Monday in May. The Super Bowl of fashion… the MET Gala. This year’s theme: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, combines the likes of haute couture and religious art. The theme was evident on the red carpet, with all the halos, crosses and crowns affixed to A-lister’s heads. My only complaint about the red carpet this year was that the theme was too omnipresent and predictable, with everyone dressed in a similar Versace, Dolce or Jean Paul Gaultier frock. Here are my best and worst dressed at the 2018 Met Gala.
Best Dressed at the 2018 Met Gala
Jasmine Saunders is dripping in gold like the Vatican. This custom dress was made by H&M! She looks absolutely stunning, and her floral braid is the stuff bridal Pinterest dreams are made of.
Lana Del Rey and Jared Leto are a dream team in head to toe Gucci. I love how they took on the theme full force.
Jennifer Lopez is KILLING it in this Balmain look. The feathers at the bottom really do it for me, she’s like a rock and roll angel.
Rihanna, perhaps the Pope of pop culture right now is jaw-dropping in this Maison Margiela Artisanal look by John Galliano. She always brings it to the Met Gala red carpet (I loved her look last year at the Rei Kawukabo exhibit), and this is one of my favourite looks she has ever worn to a Met Gala.
While I’m not a fan of SJP’s blue eyeshadow, this Dolce and Gabbana look is absolutely extravagant. SJP finally brought her A-Game after disappointing looks in the past couple years.
WOWZA. Kim Kardashian is a golden goddess in this Versace gown. She is looking amazing, and I’m obsessed with her hair and makeup look.
Zendaya was one of the few stars to branch out of the literal theme, and appeared as a fierce Joan of Arc in this Versace gown. The armour, details and colour of this dress are impeccable. She is quickly becoming one of my favourite style stars.
There are no words for the elegance of this Givenchy look. Lily Collins is striking, and resembles the late Audrey Hepburn in this nun-inspired frock. I’m completely in love with this outfit.
Oh. my. god. Blake Lively shut the entire gala down in this work of art by Versace. The dress was so large, she needed a party bus (complete with Christian Louboutin as her date – arguably the only man worth swapping Ryan Reynolds for), to make it to the Met. There is no disputing Lively was best dressed this year. She is positively regal in this burgundy look, I nearly dropped my phone when I first saw it.
Worst dressed at the 2018 Met Gala
I think Tesla’s stock might take a bit of a dive tomorrow morning after Elon Musk’s rumoured lady, Grimes, showed up to the 2018 Met Gala in this cheap corset that looked like it came from a suburban Hot Topic.
Unpopular opinion but I was not a fan of Amal Clooney’s Richard Quinn pant/gown combo. Lawyer in the front, Met Gala in the back. Throw a navy blazer on and Clooney can go to court if she zips off this floral train.
Zoe Kravitz was a bit of a snooze in this extremely revealing lace Saint Laurent dress. One thing is for sure, she has a Heavenly Body.
Another unpopular opinion, but I’m not into Katy Perry’s Versace angel. The wings are amazing, but the gold over the knee boots ruined this look for me. A pair of stiletto gladiator sandals up to her knees would have nailed this look!
Kate Bosworth looks so awkward (doesn’t she always though?) in this Oscar de la Renta gown. There’s just too much tulle going on here.
Another white dress snooze was Selena Gomez in this custom Coach gown. It’s a pretty dress, very subdued and bohemian, but it’s a little bit too négligée for the Met Gala.
Ruby Rose wore this tomato red dress resembling a Cardinal. There’s too much going on here and I wish she had just worn a red velvet dress, because I think the overall concept and interpretation of the theme was good.
Kylie Jenner. Ugh. Why do all these sisters get to attend? While Kim and Kendall looked amazing, this black dress was boring and nothing special. Even her hair, makeup and styling look like it was a last minute thing, but it was cute to see how her and Scott were on the red carpet.
That is Scarlett Johansson. Not the chair of the Country Club formal… but ScarJo in Marchesa. Blockbuster movie star. This is the most sad, lame and off-theme look of the evening, earning her the spot as the worst dressed star at the 2018 Met Gala. Without Harvey Weinstein’s stronghold on Hollywood, will stars continue to wear Marchesa? While the designs are pretty, they are more consumer-oriented and lack a red-carpet wow factor, and the above is a perfect example of this. The nepotism is over.
